BD® Sharps Containers

BD® Sharps Containers are BD's collectors for the disposal of needles and other sharps at the point of use. BD frames sharps disposal as the final step in the continuum of care and states that its disposal solutions focus on safety, quality and convenience — protecting clinicians and patients at every step, including disposal. BD describes standard infectious waste sharps collectors as red, available with different lid designs and sizes, and covering multiuse, nesting and phlebotomy applications. Multiuse one-piece collectors are listed by BD in five sizes and multiuse nestable collectors in three. The collectors are designed to improve tamper resistance by preventing hand access to the contents, and clear tops are available with multiple opening styles to accommodate different sizes of waste and different environments — relevant when the same estate covers phlebotomy rooms, wards and theatres. BD also notes compatibility with BD locking cabinets, which provide security and prevent unwanted access to container contents, and with sharps collection accessories such as brackets and stabilisers for added security and stability. Container selection is therefore usually made together with infection control and facilities, since mounting method and volume drive the choice as much as the clinical activity.
