BD Nexiva™ Closed IV Catheter System
The BD Nexiva™ Closed IV Catheter System is BD's all-in-one peripheral intravenous catheter. Rather than a catheter that is assembled at the bedside from separate components, BD describes Nexiva™ as combining four individual devices in one: the IV catheter, an extension set, a stabilisation device and needle-free connector(s). BD reports that the closed design has been clinically demonstrated to achieve longer dwell times — dwelling up to 144 hours — with reduced complications versus an open system. The built-in stabilisation platform and integrated extension set are described by BD as reducing manipulation and movement at the insertion site, and BD reports that they have been shown to reduce dislodgment and mechanical phlebitis, with reduced blood exposure during insertion attributable to the pre-assembled system. Two further BD technologies are integrated: BD Vialon™ catheter material, which BD states softens in the vein to enable longer dwell time and reduce the chance of phlebitis, and BD Instaflash™ needle technology, which provides quick blood visualisation that BD says may help improve insertion success and therefore reduce insertion attempts. For infusion therapy and vascular access teams, the relevant considerations are site preservation and standardisation of peripheral access practice. Azmed Devices provides documentation, tender support and supply coordination for BD vascular access products in Azerbaijan.
