Cosmos™ coils are MicroVention's spherical platinum framing and filling coils, designed to form a stable, tightly packed three-dimensional mass within the aneurysm sac. The spherical secondary shape — unlike helical or complex-shaped alternatives — seats itself compactly against adjacent coil loops, minimizing the void spaces that can lead to incomplete aneurysm packing and subsequent recanalization. This geometry makes Cosmos particularly well-suited to wide-neck and bifurcation aneurysms where maintaining coil position during and after deployment is more challenging. The family spans two system sizes: Cosmos 10 (0.010 in delivery system, compatible with Headway 17 microcatheters) covers smaller aneurysms from 2 mm to 10 mm diameter, and Cosmos 18 (0.018 in system, compatible with Headway 17 in the larger sizes) covers 6 mm to 24 mm aneurysms. Coil lengths range from 2 cm through 65 cm, allowing selection of the appropriate coil volume for each packing stage. Cosmos is compatible with both mechanical and electrolytic detachment. For physicians combining products, Cosmos frames well with HydroSoft or HydroFrame hydrogel-coated finishing coils, which expand after deployment to fill residual void volumes and further reduce recanalization risk.

What is the Cosmos™ coil and what types of aneurysms does it treat?
Cosmos™ is MicroVention’s premium bare-platinum detachable coil family for cerebral aneurysm embolization. It is used in the framing and filling phases of coil embolization across all aneurysm types — small saccular, large, giant, ruptured, and unruptured — via Headway 17 microcatheter. The Cosmos 18 line (0.018 in system) serves larger aneurysms requiring more substantial framing; the Cosmos 10 line (0.010 in system) provides finer filling coils for smaller vessels.
What is the difference between Cosmos 10 and Cosmos 18?
Cosmos 10 (0.010 in system) and Cosmos 18 (0.018 in system) refer to the wire diameter of the coil itself. Cosmos 18 uses a heavier platinum wire, providing greater framing force for the initial basket in larger aneurysms (6–24 mm diameter). Cosmos 10 uses a finer wire for filling smaller residual voids and for use in small aneurysms where the heavier Cosmos 18 wire would be too stiff. Both are delivered via Headway 17 microcatheter.
What catalog numbers are available for Cosmos™ coils?
Cosmos 10 range: 100202CSSR-V (2 mm × 2 cm) through 101036CSSR-V (10 mm × 36 cm). Cosmos 18 range: 180619CS-V (6 mm × 19 cm) through 182468CS-V (24 mm × 68 cm). Full sizing covers 2–24 mm diameter and 2–68 cm length, enabling treatment of aneurysms from the smallest fundus through giant lesions.
Can Cosmos™ coils be used with HydroSoft or HydroFrame coils in the same procedure?
Yes. Cosmos bare-platinum coils are frequently combined with HydroSoft and HydroFrame hydrogel-coated coils in the same procedure. A common sequence is: Cosmos 18 for initial framing (establishing the basket), followed by HydroFrame for secondary framing (hydrogel expansion tightens the basket), then HydroSoft or Cosmos 10 for final filling. This hybrid approach takes advantage of Cosmos’s predictable bare-platinum framing behaviour alongside the packing density advantages of hydrogel expansion.
