By Azmed Devices Editorial Team

Smith and Nephew has acquired Integrity Orthopaedics to strengthen its sports medicine portfolio. The acquisition integrates the Tendon Seam system, an advanced rotator cuff repair technology, into the company's existing shoulder repair business.
Smith and Nephew recently announced the completion of its acquisition of Integrity Orthopaedics, a move designed to enhance its sports medicine division. According to the company, this acquisition incorporates Integrity Orthopaedics' Tendon Seam technology, which is described as an innovative biomechanical rotator cuff repair system. This system aims to address the limitations of current surgical standards by potentially reducing re-tear rates and improving overall patient outcomes.
The Tendon Seam system features a unique repair configuration that utilizes microanchors and continuous suture technology to provide enhanced fixation. According to the company, the system is designed to facilitate stronger repairs, shorter surgical procedures, and faster patient recovery times. The technology received 510(k) clearance in 2023 and is specifically indicated for the reattachment of soft tissue to bone, including ligaments and tendons.
The significance of this acquisition lies in the market context of rotator cuff repairs in the United States, where approximately 500,000 procedures are performed annually. The company reported that traditional surgical techniques often face high structural failure rates, which historically range between 20 and 40 percent. By adding Tendon Seam to its portfolio alongside the REGENETEN Bioinductive Implant, Smith and Nephew aims to offer a differentiated combination of biomechanical repair and biological augmentation.
Smith and Nephew intends to leverage its existing commercial channels in the United States to accelerate the adoption of this new technology. Following the acquisition, the company plans to focus on gathering evidence to support the global expansion of the product. Christie Van Geffen, Senior Vice President of Sports Medicine Marketing, stated that the company looks forward to setting a new standard of care through the integration of these advanced solutions for surgeons and their patients.
