Smith & Nephew has launched its next-generation ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Foam Dressing, a multi-layer solution designed to support advanced wound management and the prevention of pressure injuries.
Smith & Nephew announced the launch of its new ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Foam Dressing, a technology-driven product developed to assist clinicians with both wound management and pressure injury prevention. According to the company, the dressing features a unique five-layer construction designed to enhance clinical performance. This innovation aims to minimize dressing leakage and reduce the frequency of dressing changes, which the company reported as essential factors in improving patient outcomes and protecting vulnerable skin.
The launch addresses the significant global burden of chronic wounds and pressure injuries. Smith & Nephew highlighted data suggesting that up to one in 50 adults suffer from chronic wounds, while hospital-acquired pressure injuries remain a major concern, often extending hospital stays by an average of 9.5 days. Rohit Kashyap, President of Advanced Wound Management, stated that the product reflects the company's commitment to wound care innovation by providing meaningful benefits that help patients recover while reducing the clinical burden on healthcare systems.
According to Smith & Nephew, the dressing incorporates proprietary technologies developed through collaboration with healthcare professionals and patients. Laboratory testing indicates that the dressing locks in significantly more exudate than other foam products and keeps over 99 percent of bacteria away from the wound bed. These capabilities support longer wear times and have the potential to release over 10 percent of nursing time typically spent on dressing changes, contributing to greater operational efficiency in clinical settings.
The product's biomechanical design focuses on preventing pressure injuries by managing mechanical energy. The dressing contains unbonded sliding layers that absorb up to 93 percent of mechanical energy, which the company states can help reduce the risk of pressure injury by over 65 percent. Professor Amit Gefen noted that the structure dissipates shear forces before they reach the skin and soft tissues, providing a pioneering technology that protects patients at risk of developing pressure-related complications.
ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Dressing is currently available in five shapes and various sizes to accommodate diverse wound care requirements. Smith & Nephew reported that the product is initially launching in the United States, with plans to expand into European and other international markets throughout 2026. This rollout is part of the company's ongoing strategy to address unique patient needs and advance the possibilities within the global wound care landscape.
