Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit Opens at Liv Bona Dea Hospital in Baku

A new bone marrow transplantation unit with six specially isolated wards has opened at Liv Bona Dea Hospital, expanding advanced haematology care available within Azerbaijan.
On December 11, 2025, the opening ceremony of a Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit was held at Liv Bona Dea Hospital in Baku, attended by the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Azerbaijan's Minister of Health. The new unit performs bone marrow transplantations for both adults and children.
According to public reporting, the unit includes six specially isolated wards and infrastructure that allows treatment of up to 80 patients annually. The hospital's eight-bed haematology department features wards equipped with HEPA-filtered positive-pressure systems for infection protection, chemotherapy preparation in biosafety cabinets, and an independent apheresis unit for cell collection, supported by a blood bank capable of preparing erythrocytes, platelets, plasma and other components.
The opening means more Azerbaijani patients can receive complex haematology treatment without travelling abroad. Units of this type depend on a demanding technology stack — sterile isolation infrastructure, transfusion and apheresis systems, laboratory equipment and a continuous supply of specialized consumables — illustrating how advanced clinical programs raise the technical bar across the country's hospital sector.
