Venous intervention technologies from BD: Venovo and Venclose

An overview of how BD describes two of its venous disease technologies: the Venovo Venous Stent System for deep venous obstruction and the Venclose RF Ablation Catheter for superficial vein reflux.

Two ends of the venous spectrum

Venous disease is treated across two broad territories. Deep venous obstruction in the iliofemoral segment is typically addressed with dedicated venous stents, while superficial venous reflux is treated by ablating the diseased vein and redirecting flow into healthy veins. BD publishes product families in both areas, and describes chronic venous disease as a progressive condition whose signs and symptoms may worsen without treatment.

Understanding which technology belongs to which pathology matters for procurement as much as for practice, because the two categories involve different capital requirements, different consumables and different clinical teams. A venous stent programme sits inside an interventional suite; an RF ablation programme can sit in a much lighter-weight procedural environment built around a generator and single-use catheters.

Venovo Venous Stent System

BD describes the Venovo Venous Stent System with an emphasis on stent architecture. According to BD, the stent uses an open-cell, flexible design intended to conform to vessel curvature while maintaining lumen diameter, incorporates tantalum markers for enhanced fluoroscopic visibility, and is engineered to balance radial force, flexibility and compression resistance. BD also highlights flared ends intended to help prevent stent migration, and a triaxial delivery system designed for deployment control and precise placement.

On clinical experience, BD points to 36-month data from the VERNACULAR study and reports zero stent fractures at 36 months in that study. On sizing, BD states that the system offers diameters up to 20 mm and stent lengths up to 160 mm. Claims about relative market position on the BD site are made with reference to the United States, and available sizes and indications in any other market follow local registration and the official instructions for use.

Venclose RF Ablation Catheter

For superficial venous reflux, BD describes the Venclose RF Ablation Catheter as a device used to treat superficial vein reflux through endovenous radiofrequency ablation, a treatment approach BD notes has been established for more than 20 years. The company highlights a dual heating length design that lets a clinician switch between a 2.5 cm and a 10 cm heating element to treat both short and long refluxing vein segments with one catheter, a 6F profile intended to help navigate tortuous anatomy, and markings with a curved tip to ease navigation and positioning.

BD notes that the catheter is powered by the Venclose RF Ablation Generator and that the two are intended to be used together as a system. The generator is described as having a touchscreen display presenting real-time procedure data, including active heating element length, countdown timer, heating element temperature, delivered power and total energy, and a cycle counter, with catheter activation possible from the handle or a foot pedal without leaving the sterile field.

Planning a venous service

Hospitals building or expanding a venous service usually work backwards from case mix: the expected split between deep obstructive disease and superficial reflux determines whether capital sits in imaging and stent inventory or in ablation generators and disposables. Duplex ultrasound capacity, follow-up clinic capacity and compression therapy pathways are part of the same plan.

Detailed specifications and available configurations are available on request, and clinical use must follow the manufacturer's official instructions for use. Azmed Devices provides documentation, tender support and supply coordination for BD technologies in Azerbaijan.
