OXINIUM Oxidized Zirconium

OXINIUM Oxidized Zirconium is an advanced orthopaedic implant material designed for hip and knee arthroplasty. Unlike a coating, this material is engineered to combine the wear resistance characteristic of ceramics with the structural durability inherent to metal. According to Smith+Nephew, it is further designed to offer greater corrosion resistance than cobalt-chrome or ceramic alternatives, while containing virtually no cobalt, nickel, or chromium, which helps address concerns regarding metal sensitivity. The design philosophy centers on providing a reliable bearing surface that minimizes complications often associated with traditional metallic implants. OXINIUM Technology is intended to reduce wear and minimize the risk of brittle fracture or phase transformation, which can be concerns with standard ceramic materials. Furthermore, the material is designed to have a reduced impact on the inflammatory response by lowering pro-inflammatory cytokine expression.
