BD® PosiFlush™ Prefilled Flush Syringes
BD® PosiFlush™ Prefilled Flush Syringes are BD's ready-to-use flush syringes for vascular access device maintenance. BD frames flushing as a routine task with significant impact: it maintains patency of the line and reduces the risk of complications including occlusion and premature catheter failure, while flushing before and after medication helps prevent contact between incompatible medicines and helps ensure the full dose is delivered. BD cites INS Guidelines, which recommend the use of commercially manufactured prefilled flush syringes, where available, to reduce the risk of catheter-associated bloodstream infection and device failure, save syringe preparation time and support optimal flushing technique. The syringe design reflects those objectives. BD describes a three-rib stopper intended to reduce the likelihood of syringe-induced catheter reflux compared with previous BD PosiFlush™ designs, and a consistent 10 mL syringe barrel diameter that may help lower the risk of catheter damage due to injection pressure. A Luer-Lok™ tip cap provides a robust seal for closure integrity, which BD relates to preventing touch contamination, and a retaining ring removes the ability to pull the plunger back so solution cannot enter the non-sterile area of the syringe. BD also highlights labelling: clear labelling and bold print enable identification of syringe volume, lot number and expiration date and distinguish heparin and citrate syringes, which BD states complies with Joint Commission and ISMP medication labelling guidance.
